Hot Divisional Battles
by Dennis Ranahan

Weather at three outdoor NFL sites today could be a factor. In Tampa, where the Buccaneers host the Atlanta Falcons, showers and thunderstorms are forecasted. A 50% chance of rain and 16 mph winds are expected in Jacksonville where the Jaguars host the Indianapolis Colts. In another Florida location, Miami, showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the Dolphins game against the New England Patriots.

The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings meet at Ford Field in a game that not only involves a pair of top teams from the highly competitive NFC North Division, but one of the league’s best offenses against the very best defense in football. The offense belongs to the Lions, and the Vikings have allowed a league low 74 points while winning all six of their games this season.

While the Vikings have a rock-solid defense, their offense is one of the lowest scoring units in football. Only three teams, the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans have scored less than the 125 tallied by Minnesota this season. Those three teams that have scored less than the Vikings have a combined 2-17 record.

How good is the Vikings defense? It has turned a team with an offense that struggles into an undefeated team seven weeks into the 2026 season. The Lions have had trouble stopping opponents, they have allowed 165 points, but their prolific offense has put up 184 and allowed Detroit to win four of their six starts.

The Vikings will have their hands full in Detroit as they look to keep their record perfect, but laying points, in this case 3½, against the best defense in football is high risk ball. As is betting on the Vikings to win a seventh straight game.

The NFL schedule offers three divisional games this week with the first-place squad putting their record up against a team looking to move closer. The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the season last Sunday night in Seattle, now another loss, when they face the Broncos in Denver today, would drop them behind the Broncos in the AFC West standings.
